Watching a train struggling up
Saluda Mountain just outside of
Try on recently, pushed by the
“helper” engine which stays there
just for the purpose, inspired me
to dig into history to find when
the first train scaled the mountain.
I found that, 59 years ago, the
first train to cross the Blue Ridge
at that point left Spartanburg for
Asheville. It made the trip to
Hendersonville all right but upon
arriving there, was so exhausted
that it took ten years for it to
make the trip from Hendersonville
