Kiwanis Tuesday The Tryon Kiwanis club will .neet on Tuesday at 1 p. m., at ) ,dgewood Inn with R. L. McNeely in charge of the program. Mr. McNeely yielded his program last week to John Randolph of Virginia who spoke on the advantages of a Savings and Loan bank for Tryon. The last writing of Mrs. Peattie was found among her things last week and forwarded to The Bulle tin by her son, Dr. Roderick Peattie. It is published on another page in this issue. Many Tryon ites will treasure it as her last literary work and, too, because it is a picture of her interesting garden at Dunwanderin in Tryon. ETAOIN No doubt many readers of newspapers have wondered why they often see a mixed up line of type that always reads etaoin shrdlu cmfwyp. There isn’t much news today so we’ll tell you about that. When the printer makes a mistake on the linotype machine and realizes it before the line is finished it is quicker for him to fill up the line by running his fingers down the kepboard and striking all letters in rapid succession and cast that line and start over, than it is to correct the line in error. The letters on a linotype machine run downward—etaoin shrdlu cmfwyp just as those on a typewriter run aicross—qwortyuiop asdfghjkl, etc. The operator depends on the proof reader and the make-up man to keep the line out of the paper. The next time you see one just remember that they overlooked it. The operator was on vacation last week and the editor substituted. The linotype keyboard is barely touched as you would a hot iron, so after a week fingering with shrdul and cmfwyp on a light touch, typewriting seemed odd pounding' asdfghjkl zxcvbnm. A printei'-editotr has to keep the al phabet in mind in four arrange ments for when he goes to the hand cases the letters run jbcdekisfg lmnhoypw, etc., and the hand let ters are all upside down. So you see there is no wnoder newspapers make errors sometimes. Henry Card from Henry Shankle, Jr., states that he had reached Topeka, Kansas, on Thursday. Cair O. K.
