C., FRIDAY, AllC. 9, 1935 Est. 1-31-28 Scout Jamboree Canceled by F. R. Washington, Aug. B.—Declaring he acted “with deep regret,” Presi dent Roosevelt today canceled the national Boy Scout jamboree be cause of an infantile paralysis epidemic in this section. Nearly 35,000 bovs were headed for the national capital for the big Scout meeting scheduled for Aug ust 21 to 30. The decision to cancel the ses sion was reached at a White House conference attended by Surgeon General Hugh S. Cummings, Dis trict of Columbia officials, and a Scout executive. Reports were considered from health officers from Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina. “While this (infantile paralysis) prevalence was not considered to be unduly alarming,” said a White House statement, “the conferees decided it would be to the best interest of the Scouts and all to cancel the jamboree.” Observer. Mr. Arledge is a graduate of Wake Forest col lege and is the son of Clerk of Court Jno. A. Arledge. Officers Elected for Tryon Fire Dept. At the annual meeting of the Tryon Fire Department on Wed nesday evening the following offi cers were elected: Jim Fisher, chief; J. S. Arledge, assistant chief; Dick Taylor, captain; Walt Glover, seereta.ry-treasurer. N. C. Employment Group Reformed Raleigh, Aug. B.—District officials of the North Carolina Employment Service yesterday heard Mrs. May Thompson Evans, state director, outline the department’s new set up at a conference here. The 15 district officers, district managers, and counties included in each district announced by Mrs. Evans include P. Lane Gas ton for the Asheville district, which includes Buncombe, • Hay wood, Henderson, Madison and Transylvania counties. Polk and Rutherford counties fall in the Morganton district, the manager of which is Carlotta S. Norton. Hendersonville Tirnes- News.
