McDonald, of Winston-Salem, leader of the anti sales bloc and champion of the schools in the 1935 General As sembly, today announced his can didacy for the Democratic nomin ation for governor of North Caro lina. “The problems which North Carolina faces center around taxa tion, government organization, education, and the social-economic welfare of the people of the state. My willingness to become a can didate for governor is based simply on the fact that my entire life has been devoted to a study of these problems”, Dr. McDonald said. House Burned The vacant house of Eulan Ford .on Pine Street was destroyed by /ire on Sunday morning about 4 o’clock. The house had been vacant for about eight d'atys. It was in sured for SI,OOO. Seattle, Aug. 18.—While plans were being made to hold funeral services for Will Rogers at Los Angeles Thursday afternoon, the Pan American Airways plane, bringing the bodies of Rogers and Wiley Post here from Point Bar row, Alaska, landed at Vancouver, B. C., at 8:55 (EST.), tonight. Joe Crosson, the ace Alaska flier who is piloting the funeral plane on the treacherous 3,000-mile jour ney over the wilds of the North land, planned to spend the night in Vancouver and fly on here to morrow morning.—Asheville Citi zen. Hops-Crandall Mrs. Louise Hops of Evanston, 111., and Mr. Frank Crandall of Tryon were married on Saturday evening at the home of the bride. They left immediately for New York City where they will sail on Wednesday for a tour of Denmark, Sweden and Finland, and will re turn to Tryon about October 1. Gibbs-Messer Miss Faye Gibbs, daughter of Mrs. Martha E. Gibbs of Mill Spring was married on Saturday to Mr. Clark Messer of Waynes ville, N. C. The ceremony was per formed by the Rev. Chas. B. Tram mel of Columbus. The bride was educated at Asheville Normal and Mars Hill college, and is a teacher in the Haywood county schools The groom is connected with the State Highway department. They will make their home in Waynes ville. Kiwanis Tuesday County Agent Joe A. Wilson will have charge o's the Tryon Kiwanis club meeting on Tuesday at 1 p. m., at Edgewood Inn. Seth M. Vining has the current events. Vacant Lot Going The vacant lot will be vacant no longer at the corner of Maple and Trade street, where the Sinclair Oil Co., will have a new service station to be built of concrete and brick in the mpst modern design. The service station will occupy the entire frontage on Trade street. The Sinclair people leased the property from the Ballenger Co.
