C., WEDNESDAY, AUG. 21, 1935 Est. 1-31-28 HENRY Henry Shankle, Jr.’s first de tailed report of his trip across the pntinent in a third-hand Model-T -ill will he published in this weed’s Polk County News which sells for only five cents a copy. Henry’s story reads like Pilgrim’s Progress, Robinson Crusde and Gulliver’s Travels. Henry had it oevr De- Soto, who was the first white man to see the Mississippi, for Henry had the thrill of watching boats <Jf commerce carry freight up and down the river that was explored by LaSalle and other Frenchmen. Heading for the couniry opened by Lewis and Clark, Henry passed thru lonely deserts and was scrut inized by mountain lions that crossed his path and made chills run up his spine. The old T-model made all mountains in high. He has great respect for early pioneers jio first made the Oregon Trail in ivered wagons. He says Portland is the most wonderful city he has ever seen and that people out there are in favor of the Old Age Pen sion. Read his letter in The Polk County News. At Kiwanis Tuesday Judge W. F. Shipman of Hendersonville and Roone Arledge of New York were guest speakers at the Tryon Ki wanis program on Tuesday at 1 p. m., at Edgewood Inn. “Strange As It Seems” Look at the top line of the front page of The Bulletin and you wi'l notice that The Bulletin was en ered as second class mail matter jft the Post office in Tryon on Aug. 29, 1928, exactly seven years ago yesterday. Up to that time The Bulletin was distributed free in Tryon. On August 20 it became a real paid in advance daily news paper. So all you good people who have been taking The Bulletin ever since it first started may re new your subscriptions now and save getting a bill on September 1. It is just $1.50 a year. A coincident is the publishing yes terday in John Hix’s “Strange As It Seems” cartoon an item about The Bulletin being the tiniest daily newspaper in the world. More publicity for Tryon. Miss Furry to Be In Asheville August 28th Miss Margaret Furry, Assistant Textile Chemist in the Bureau of Home Economics, and of the Wash ington office, is to be in Asheville on August 27-29th and will give a demonstration using native herbs and dyes. The meeting will be held in the home demonstration agent’s kitch en in the court house in Asheville on August 28th at 10:30 o’clock. The home agent hopes there will be a number of women in Polk coaurty to attend this meeting. She wants to insist on the women who use the dyes in different materials to attend the meeting and get this valuable information.
