WINTER PAYS EARLY VISIT TO NEW YORK Albany, N. Y., Oct 7. — New York state folk wei'e beginning to believe in the old axiom about Oc tober’s clear cool weather tonight after a day and night of shivering in temperatures that in some places dropped halfway from freezing to zero. Readings of 15 and 16 above zero were reported in several sec tions. The unprecedented cold snap had . its serious side tc>o, with its dam age to grape crops in central southern New York and to vege table crops generally in the north ern part of the state. The temperature of Owl’s Head, traditionally the spot where the weather man makes his cold waves, was 18 above zero last night. The ground was reported frozen to the depth of two inches and thick ice formed on pools of water. -v At Malone, a few miles alway, it \was 28 degrees, four below freez ing when the milk man made his rounds this morning. At Moun tain View and Lake Titus it was reported 20 above zero. What produce wa<s left in gardens was frozen and leaves tumbled from trees. At Dansville, N. Y., near the Finger Lakes grape region, the drop loss was estimated at 200 tons. Thermometer readings were 28 degrees here. Batavia, N. Y., reported readings of about 20 de grees also.—Asheville Citizen. Polk County Apple Show in Tryon on Oct. 11 and 12, next to Slack’s Pharmacy. McKee-W alker Miss Maggie McKee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. E. McKee of Mill Spring and a teacher in the Mill Spring public school, was married on Saturday noon to Mr. Yates Walker, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Walker of Mill Spring. The groom is employed by the Duke Power Company at Turner Shoals. Tea-Lecture The Lanier Club tea and lecture was the outstanding program scheduled for this afternoon. The t-ea is to be served at the library from 4 to 5 o’clock. Following this social hour Mrs. A. L. Berry, a world traveller, Bible scholar and author, will give a lecture on ‘‘Lost and Buried Cities of the East.” MASS MEETING FOR TONIGHT All citizens interested in help in to sell the assets of Tryon are urged to attend the mass meeting tonight at Missildine’s hall prompt ly at 7:30.
