AT TRYON, N, C., UNDER THE ACT OF CONGRESS, MARCH 3, 1879 The Apple Show Was A Success The Polk County Apple Show which was held for the first time in Tryon was a big success. The splendid co-operation of all citi zens who were asked to taike* part put the show over in a big way. The Tryon Garden club decorated the show room and made it very attractive with autumn leaves and reeds. C. M. Howes, C. J. Lynch, Joe Wilson, H. R. Niswonger of Raleigh, Miss Agnes McLeod, and members of the Garden club com mittee were very active in pro moting the work. The Town of Tryon helped and various organ izations contributed their influence. C. J. Lynch was the able auction eer and what he didn’t auction off he negotiated a trade with lo-> cal merchants so that everybody was pleased with the results of the show, which was held on Friday and Saturday. j} Today’s Headlines Hints of early peace in Africa come from Rome. It is thought that the show of strength by the Italian army in adding new terri tory will satisfy the Italian peo ple. Ethiopia is reported to be massing a larger army under its crown prince. American Federation of Labor sees continued business improve ment. The Japanese make a raid in Soviet Russia according to reports. Joan Orawford and Franchot Tone were married on Friday at Englewood Cliffs, N. J. Kiwanis Club At Landrum Hotel 'flhe Tryon KiWanlis club Will meet on Tuesday at 1 p. m., at the Imperial Hotel in Landrum. President Ralph S. Jackson will have charge of the program. Carroll P. Rogers will give the current events. Spartanburg Fair Opens Tomorrow The Spartanburg County Fair, to be held in Spartanburg this week, is expected to bring together the best auto and horse races, Midway shows, grandstand acts, and agricul tural exhibits to be found in this section. The A. A. A. Eastern Auto Cham* pionship races will be held Saturday October 19. These races will bring famed racers hailing from New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, and other Eastern states. It is expected that a large field of 40 to 50 entries will be filed in the horse races. The motercycle races always furnish plenty of thrils. In front of the grandstands acro batics will be presented twice dai ly and a briliant display of fire works each evening. The Rubin and Cherry Shows will provide amusement on the Midway. Auto accidents over the nation reported at 130 for the past week.
