C., UNDER THE ACT OF CONGRESS, MARCH 3. 1879 A BIG SLIDE ON RAILROAD A big slide from the mountain fell on the railroad track just be low Melrose on Wednesday night about 10:30. A freight train soon afterwards ran into it and did con siderable damage to two wooden box cars and also some damage to the engine. The fireman was slightly injured when he jumped from the cab. None of the cars jumped the track but the force of the collision was so great that it smashed the two wooden cars to gether. Wrecking crews from all directions were rushed to the scene to clear the track as soon as possible. The track was ex pected to be open by this even ing, although a snow storm raged all night Thursday. Passengers were transferred by bus between Tryon and Saluda. Library Hours For the benefit'of newcomers the opening hours of the Lanier li brary are as follows: Tuesdays, 2:30 to 5:30 p. n Thursdays, 9:30 to 12:30 a. Saturdays. 9:30 to 12:30 a. and 2:30 to 5:30 p. m. 33’ The Holden reading room wilL be open on Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons for reading only. Entrance at the side door on Melrose Avenue. Farmers Federation Annual Meeting The annual meeting of the stock holders of the Farmers Federation was held at the warehouse at Try on recently with President James G. K. McClure. The business for the present year showed consider able gain over last year. The fol lowing directors were elected: Frank Jackson, J. H. Gibbs, Mrs. Joe Camp, C. M. Howes, J. T. Wal drop and Dudley C. Smith. It was decided to hold a county-wide mass meeting at the courthouse at Columbus on February 21st. An nouncement of the meeting will be made later. J. T. Waldrop and C. M. Howes were elected to represent Polk county at the directors’ meeting in Asheville on February 22nd. Tea for Two Miss Annie Ravenel has a repu tation for being a good hostess and fifty people have already made reservations for the tea on Satur day afternoon at the Lanier li \ brary. These reservations are made for several reasons. It is hard to prepare refreshments for an indefinite number of people and since this tea is for the benefit of the library the committee doesn’t want to prepare too much food at added expense. If you want tea just for yourself, you and your friend, or you and several friends, telephone Miss Annie, now, and run those reservations frotn 50 to '75.
