THURSDAY, MARCH 26, 1936 INTERESTING GARDEN CLUB PROGRAM The Tryon Garden club held a very interesting program on Wed nesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. George L. Canfield in Gillette Woods. Mrs. R. T. Brooks read a very clever paper on Random Notes on Gardening. Miss C’risto Jbel Sawyer was appointed chair man of a committee to seek co operation with other civic organi zations to do some roadside plant ing. Half of the proceeds of the Garden club supper on April 9 at Hotel Tryon will be donated to St. Luke’s hospital. The club voted to help Miss Mabel Colgate do some landscaping around the Katherine Beatson Health House. Miss Alice Ball’s original paint ings from which pictures were made for her bird book will be exhi bited at home of Mrs. M. B. Flynn on the afternoon of April 3. A silver offering will be taken for this event. The Mountain market will be held on April 7 at the Katherine Beatson Health House. An interesting plant exchange was conducted which netted a neat sum for the club. New members voted Ap were Mrs. David L. Edsall, Mrs. 1C. Arthur Lincoln and Mrs. Louis Stearns. Symphony to Give Concert on April 3 The North Carolina Symphony Orchestra, a Federal Music Pro ject, will give a concert, which is jbeing sponsored by Oak Hall hotel, on Friday, April 3rd, at 8:30 p. m. Joseph DeNardo, director, will conduct the orchestra. Public cordially invited. Bulletin Devil Gets International Notice When Henry D. Shankle, Jr., former printer’s devil on The Try on Daily Bulletin, left Tryon last summer for Portland, Oregon, he made a pretty good record driving alone the 3,000 mile journey in an old Model T Ford. The trip was made without car trouble and with such little expense that the Ford Motor Co., took a picture of the Ford and wrote a story about Henry Shankle and the Bulletin in this month’s issue of the Ford news magazine which goes to all parts of the world. Steeple-Chase Ball At Oak Hall Hotel The annual Steeple-Chase Ball will be held tonight (Thursday) at Oak Hall hotel. It will be the first of a series of brilliant social events of the Horse Show season. Mrs. Mark A. Richards is the chairman of the Steeple-Chase Ball committee. The Buccaneers orches tra of Asheville will furnish the dance music. CALLED TO FLOOD ZONE M. M. Melvin of Tryon, who is an inspector for the State Board of Health, has been called by the Federal government to Harrisburg, Pa., to help with the emergency health problems which have de veloped as a result of the flood. Mrs. Melvin returned to Tryon to visit her sister, Mrs. Julia Brock, while Mr. Melvin is in the flood area.
