Dear Mr Vining,
I was so sorry to hear of your
disastrous storm. We, alas, have
also returned to winter, and we
hold very feeble hopes for a sunny
Easter. A strong north wind has
blown ell the blossoms off the trees,
and the long bank of daffodils
which lines the East Drive of Hyde
Park is already looking very moth
eaten. Perhaps, now that I come
to think of it, it IS moth-eaten!
The lights of the Dorchester Hotel
next door to it in Park Lane are
bright enough to draw every moth
in Middlesex to the neighborhood.
London is getting ready for a
general exodus to the country, and
the country is getting ready for a
general exodus to London. The toy
shops are a riot of Easter eggs
tied up in ribbon; rabbits with
collapsible ears; fluffy yellow
chickens with unscrewable heads,
and. chocolate lined interiors; and
laro-e sleek chocolate fishes care
fully slit down the middle, filletted,
and full of sweets. It seems in
credible how the average child
survives!
Monday is Bank Holiday, which
means a holiday for everyone all
over the country. The working man
therefore, who is free from Satur
day aftenoon to Tuesday morning,
prays for fine weather, without
which he cannot indulge in his
favorite pastimes: a) picnicking on
the very edge of England’s high
ways, in order to savour to the full
I the delicious petrol-laden air. b)
