C., UNDER THE ACT OF CONGRESS, MARCH 3, 1879 Noted Bridge Player Winning in Tennis In the Men’s singles tennis cham pionship tournament Monday af ^rnoon Theodore Lightner defeat ed George Trowbridge of New York in a well-played hard fought match by the score of 7-9, 6-4, 6-3. An appreciative audience applaud *ed the many fine shots of both plavers. On Tuesday Clarence Lightner plays Julian Hester and M. B. Caldwell plays C. P. Rogers. The semi-final matches will be played Thursday and the finals Friday afternoon. The doubles will be played tow ards the end of the week, the finals being played Sunday Forest Fires Burning On Tryon Mountain 1 Several thousand acres of forest mnd has been burning the past few days, and Warden R. B. Wil liams and about a dozen men have been fighting fire day and night. The Tryon Riding & Hunt club which maintains 500 miles of bridle paths and trails sent eight men and food to the rescue yester day. Last night Tryon mountain ridge was lighted with a million caindles. The destruction of so much mountain forest is distress ing to all nature lovers and the Tryon club is doing all it can to co operate with the land-owners in helping to preserve the beauty of their property. The BULLETIN- $1.50 A Year Girl Scouts A movement has been started to organize a permanent Girls Scout organization in Tryon. A call meet ing for that purpose was held at the Tryon school building on Mon day evening. Much interest was shown with responsive talks from Dr. J. E. Derby, W. A. Schilletter, Mrs. F. W. Sprague, Miss Dorothy Strauss, Miss Estelle Pace, Dr. George F. Taylor and Dr. C. Ar thur Lincoln. A Girls Scout Council was form ed with the following officers: Dr. J. E. Derby, president; Mrs. Maud Brand, vice-president; Miss Edith Missildine, secretary; Miss Ger trude Schoff, treasurer; Person nel chairman, Miss Dorothy Strauss; Publicity chairman, Mrs. Seth M. Vining. Othei’s on the council are Mrs. George F. Tay lor, Mrs. W. A. Schilletter, Mrs. Melbourne Smith, Mrs. Philip B. Windsor, Mrs. Ralph Erskine. About twenty-five people were present. Various phases of the scout activities were discussed and plans made to cairry on the work in the future. GARDEN CLUB TO MEET AT PEARSON'S FALLS The Tryon Garden club will meet on Wednesday, April 22 at Pearson’s Falls for an all-day meet ing “Birds and Bird Songs of the Blue Ridge”, will be the subject of the talk to be given by Mr. Samuel C. Hodges. Mrs. J. W. Richardson will be the hostess for the day. At 1 o’clock lunch will be served. All members are requested to bring lunch, but coffee will be served by Mrs. Richardson.
