MARCH 3. 1879 Nelson Jackson Wins Golf Tournament A hardfought match for the President’s cup in Tryon Country club golf tournament on Saturday afternoon resulted in Nelson Jack son, Jr., winning -over Lefty Flynn, 2 up and 1 to play. Mr. Jackson’s score was 77 and Mr. Flynn’s 78. The match was a nip and tuck con test all the way. In the Group B contest B. B. Bishop, Sr. defeated Carroll. P. Rogers 3 up and 2 to play. Mr. Bishop will play H. H. Parmelee sometime this week in the final of group B. R. M. Hall Elected County Chairman The Polk County Democratic convention was held Saturday at 111 o’clock in the Courthouse at Co r lumbus and elected 16 delegates to the State convention to be held at Raleigh. The names of the del egates and a more complete report of the convention will be published in this week’s Polk County News. F. P. Bacon was elected chairman of the convention with F. M. Bur gess as secretary. Resolutions of respect were passed for the late Senators T. T. Ballenger and J. C. Fisher. A few minutes prior to the con vention the Democratic Executive committee met and elected R. M. Hall cf Sa’uda as County chair man, Mrs. Elizabeth M. Camp of Green Creek, vice chairman, Robt. Mer?. !r.nd, Jr. of Columbus, sec retary. Try on Defeats Strong Hazelwood Ball Team Tryon edged out Hazelwood in an Industrial league slugfest at Hazelwood Saturday afternoon by a score of 12 to 11. Capps with three hits in four times up, led Tryon hitters, while Putnam beltsd a homer with two on for Hazelwood and Roulette got a triple and two singles in four at tempts. Score by innings: Tryon 010 400 304—12 15 8 Hr zelw'd 100 000 820—11 13 4 Girl Scouts Captain Trains in New York Miss Estelle Pace, captain of the newly organized Girls Scouts and teacher in the Tryon school, will leave Wednesday for Camp Edith Macy near New York City, where she will take training in Scouting for a month. The first two weeks in the camp will be de voted to the general work of the Girl Scouts while the next two weeks will be the study of the troop progress for the various Scout ages. The Girl Scout CouncP are mak ing plans for the summer program for the Scouts including swimming, handwork and tennis. Kiwanis Tuesday The Tryon Kiwanis club will meet on Tuesday at 1 o’clock at Hotel Tryon with W. E. Kilpin in charge of the program.
