C., WEDNESDAY, JUNE 3, 1936 Auto Is Burned; Drunken Occupants In Columbus Jail The Indians called it firewater. ^\nyway, a roadster automobile r|om Tennessee was burned Sunday m one of the dangerous curves this side of the Saluda highway below Turner’s Picnic grounds. The car hit the iron fence, it is said, and caught fire. Two of the occupants were airrested. for drunkenness and placed in Polk county jail at Columbus where they have been since Sunday, but were to be released today upon the re ceipt of money from Tennessee. A third occupant caught a bus be fore he could be arrested. Bonus Expected Soon Postmaster W. H. Stearns stated today that the Postal officials were expecting the Bonus checks for the Veterans to arrive in Tryon about June 18. No money will be paid at ^2 Tryon postoffice. Veterans -^Ying on rural routes will receive jfeir checks in their mail boxes along with the reguar mail, but the postmaster will notify them ehead of time just what day to be at their boxes to get the checks. Leave for Europe Miss Hope Washburn leaves on Monday by motor for Rye, N. Y., where she will visit friends before sailing for Europe on the Manhat tan. Miss Washburn will take her automobile with her and motor in England, France and the Scandi navian countries. Miss Ferdinan- j de Poppe will accopany her as far as New York. Rotary Club Changes Its Meeting Place The Tryon Rotary club which has been meeting at Oak Hall hotel has changed its meeting place for the summer to Lake Lanier Inn which is also owned by Oak Hall and operated by Z. M. Netherton. New Train Schedule The Southern Railway put on an improved train schedule Sunday morning. The morning train that formerly arrived in Tryon at 11:17 going to Asheville has been changed to 9:22 a. m., nealy two hours earlier. All the other trains are the same. The next train going rp arrives at 4:34. The ones com ing down from Asheville arrive at 12:37 and 5:03 p. m., as for merly. Here From Mexico Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Sloss arrived Tuesday to occupy their home in Gillette Woods. Mr. and Mrs. Sloss, who own a large coffee business in Mexico, have been dividing their time with Tryon and Jalapa, Mexico. But Mr. Sloss states that business conditions had become so unsafe there, due to the attitude of Mexican officials that he was forced to leave the coun try. He and Mrs. Sloss will now make their permanent home in Tryon.
