ffilu' (linunt Batlo ^Bulletin (The Smallest Daily Newspaper In The World) Vol. 9, Est. 1-31-28 TRYON, N. C., WEDNESDAY, June 4^1930 ENTERED AS SECOND-CLASS MATTER AUGUST 20, 1928, AT THE POST OFFICE AT TRYON, N. C., UNDER THE ACT OF CONGRESS, MARCH 3,1879 This Month’s Garden These showery days must be taken advantage of for any last minute planting that has to be done, to fill in bare spaces in the perennial bolder. Continuous bloom in a small garden is an im possible dream, even if we had no droughts or heat waves to consid er; but now is a good time to take note of one’s mere conspicious failures in planning. For instance, daffodils should never be planted in the main border, unless among plants of sufficiently robust growth to completely hide their decaying foliage and the bare spot left by their dying down. They will do very well along the margin of the woods when properly planted and fertilized, and will not be in the way afterwards. Tulips are bet ter taken up as soon as their foliage turns yellow, especially if in a border that will be frequently watered during the summer. This is a rather troublesome operation where the planting is thick, but the tulips need to dry out, and the necessary stirring of the ground is heloful to the plants left in the border AimuuK- used just to fill m will not be j s fine as if they had a bed to h lselves and plenty of room to spi id out; but a bed giv en up to annu-'iS alone will be va cant too much of the year to be allowed a conspicious position in the garden. You will add very much to the tidy and prosperous look of your border if you ke:p the edge plant ed with low-growing plants of evergreen and attractive foliage, like the reck pinks and the more compact types of creeping phlox. Tryon Garden Club. Masons Plan Big Pic nic and Ladies Night For Saint John's Day The three Masonic Lodges of Polk county—Skyuka, Saluda and Mill Spring are planning for the biggest night of entertainment on Wednesday evening, June 24th at Lake Lanier Inn that has ever been held out of doors in this part of the country, and is something new in the way -of a picnic. Pic nic baskets will be in order and ice cream and lemonade will be served. There will be water sports, old time fiddling and square dan cing, horse shoe pitching by teams from the three lodges, vocal se lections and specialty dancing by skilled artists, musical selections by an amplifying system and com munity singing. A large represent ative gathering of Masons, ,their wives and families will be present from other cities. WEK Bonus Bonds Checked 2-4 p.m. Postmaster W. H. Stearns says the local office of the Bonus bond checking department will be open every afternoon from 2 to 6 p. m. at Missildine”s Hall in charge of G. Isham Henderson. Clean Up City Park The Town officials are to be commended for cleaning up the little park above the depot. About half a dozen ducks were swim ming in the pond this morning & made a beautiful scene. This little paik that the inn keepers estab lished is quite an asset to the community.
