Donald C. Peattie,* writing in
terestingly in the magazine TO
DAY, has found that every day in
the year there are no less than
44,000 thunderstorms and that, at
any moment, one could see going
on in the world at the same time
at least 2.000 oil such storms, pro
vided, of course, there was a con
ceivable point of vantage.
In spite of the apparent harm
lessness of these natural electric
explosions that are so commonly
occurring, it would be foolish to
tempt them to show their capaci
ty for fatality by standing under
a tree or sitting in a drought or
answering a country telephone
while such lightning storms are
raging.—Charlotte Observer.
