The Lake Lure
Highway
Residents of Spartanburg will be
gratified to know that the work,
long delayed, of grading and sur
facing the North Carolina part of
the highway between this city and
Lake Lure is underway and should
shortly be completed.
South Carolina completed its
part of the work on this highway
some time ago and residents of this
city have been hoping that the
North Carolina highway depart
ment would hasten complettion of
its part of the job. At present
the section of the road on which
the work is being done is hardly
passable and the contractors have
posted signs warning motorists
that if they travel it they will do
so at their own risk. This con
dition will rot last long and when
the North Carolina section has been
paved the distance between Spar
tanburg and Asheville will have
been shortened by a highway that
passes through a beautiful part of
the Carolinas. It will place Lake
Lure within an hour’s drive of
Spartanburg. — Spa rt a nburg

The Woman’s Society of Erskin?
Memorial church will hold its an
nual summer supper and entertain
ment tonight at the Congregational
church. All members of the con
gregation are invited.
Masonic Picnic
The Masons of Polk county will
hold a St. John’s Day picnic and
entertainment on Wednesday eve
ning at Lake Lanier. All Masons
and their families will enjoy the*
cuting which will consist of va
rous contests, music, etc.
Georgia ousts Talmadge from the
Democratic National Committee,
Fish Fry Thursday ,
The Wesley Brotherhood will
hold a Fish Fry on Thursday eve
ning at 6 o’clock. Tickets at 35c
per plate are on sale at the Tryon
Theatre.
Mr. and Mrs. R. M. McCown
have returned from a visit to
Darlington, and other points in
South Carolina
Miss Betty Kuhn has returned
to Charldtte after spending the
week-end with Miss Cornelia Wil
liams.
Mrs. J. O. Buchanan and little
daughter, Elizabeth Anne, of
Swannanoa are visiting Elizabeth
Anne’s grandparents, Mr, and Mrs.
L. F. Buchanan.
