Our California Correspondent Dear Mr. Vining: Yesterday brought the finale to one or the meat unusual tragedies which San Francisco has witness ed in many years. Wally, the giant single-tusked bull elephant at the Fleishhacker Zoo last Tues (Jay gored and trampled to death his keeper, Edward Brown. Wally was a six-ton, twenty-two year old king of the jungle, captpred and brought to this country by Frank Buck, did the rounds with A1 G. Barnes’ circus before being feat ured with Wallace Beery in “The Champ”. The Barnes’ Circus, find ing Wally unreliable and tempera mental and often irriiable gave him to the local Zoo, where he has been a model inmate housed with three smaller elephants of oppo site sex. It was mating1 season at the Zoo, and Wally was making improper advances toward Babe, bis favorite cow-elephant, when Mr. Brown tried to deoart them The end was inevitable. Trumpet ing his savage defiance, Wally turned on Keeper Brown, seized him with his mighty trunk, re peatedly battering him against the concrete corral, tramping and goring him until his body was broken and mangled beyond recog nition. Nearby keepers and zoo at tendants, hearing Brown’s screams rushed to the scene where they finally after much struggling and fright managed to chain Wally b ' front and rear feet to the concrete pillars. Wally’s continuous trump etings and the odor of human blood caused a terrific upheaval -Continued on Back Page
