C., UNDER THE ACT OF CONGRESS, MARCH 3,1879 Tryon to Celebrate The 4th by Closing All Tryon merchants will close their places of business on Sat urday, July 4th, in observance of the National Holiday. It is also voting day for the second primary for Governor of North Carolina and for State Senator in Polk county on the Democratic ticket and for Coroner in the county on the Republican ticket. So there wi1! be a lot of people out Sat urday in addition to the picnickers Just what community celebration, if any, will be announced in Wed nesday’s Bulletin. The following stores have signed to close: Farmers Federation, A&P Tea Co., Dixie Store, McNeely’s Cash Storey Arledge Hardware, Tryon Barber Shop. Library to Observe Fourth The Lanier Library will not be open on Saturday, July 4th. Books due on that date will be extended to July 7th. Miss Mary Carpen ter, the librarian, state today. Raleigh, June 29.—State WPA officials said today World War vet erans needing employment will be given relief jobs irrespective of wheather they have received their “bonus.” London Letter, No. 11 5, Montagu Square, W. L. June 20th. Dear Mr Vining, As this is AJsclot Week, very little is happening in London in the social world, thank heaven. Af ter twelve in the morning when the race-goers lea^e, tfrere des cends a deep peace upon the city. At last one is able to drive along the streets instead of merely wiggling along them in a haze of fumes, and so, of course, one ar rives at one’s luncheon appoint ments far too early! This year there has been no royal procession along the course, but otherwise I gather from the news papers it has been, as usual, an altogether glorious and dazzling meeting. As a passionate hater of Ascot and race meetings in general I ran hardly believe this! Anyhow, the sun shone. There is an exhibition now tak ing place of Surrealist Art, which has caused untold merriment and rage in London. Old Colonels are writing to the Times about it, shocked to their gallant rores. One of the pictures is of an old satin slipper, a fragment of fungus, and a red ring; another of a fur tea set;* and another is just a solid white circle, entitled Women. Somebody smuggled in a picture last week, and placed it on the wall when nobody was looking. It had an instantaneous success! It “meant’' things to lots of people! It depicted a deformed woman with one-half blue half brown eye, and one eye made up of col oured beads. She had a beard -Continued on Page Two
