TRYON, N. C., TUESDAY, STAMP COLLECTORS MEET When Mr. E. Perry Manville, local philatelist, Prof. Mervin E. Oakes, principal of the Green; Creek school, E. A. Turner, Eu geni, and Frank Turner got to gether at the Turner home one evening last week, they demon strated the possibility of a liv i stamp club for Tryon. The Turners showed their spe - cialized collections of Chinese an ' United States stamps, and ther was much talk of '“varieties, sing les, blocks, imperforates, errors ' etc.; but the highlight of the ev ening came when Prof. Oake . showed his method of stamps col lecting .and arrangement. Prof. Oakes, for many years a teacher of Biology, now director of the Green’s Creek school, has harnessed his hobby to his profes sion. “Philately in Science” he calls his interesting and novel col lection. Beginning with inverter brates, they run the gamut from dragon flies of Japanese stamps, snakes of the Straits Settlements, depicting lions and tigers and fi nally the magic white elephants of India. Likewise, Prof. Oakes has gone into plant life and into the stamps showing musicians and a surprising array of instruments of music from every section of the world. He also has a collection of map stemos, illustrating philately in Geogi’aphy which ought to make the study of the earth’s surface a fascinating one for Johnny and Mary.
