C„ FRIDAY, JAN. 15, 1937 Council To Assist Private Benefactors (Contributed) The Polk County Council of So- Agencies, organized last , ...onday, is intended not only to coordinate the work of social wel fare organizations but also to assist individuals in their private benevolences, if they desire infor mation concerning persons who may apply to them for aid. The Council has no wish or purpose to direct or control private giving. Neither will it make available to curiosity-seekers the names and conditions of those persons who are receiving assistance* from so cial agencies. It does happen, however, that some - nnwrendv very needy person sometimes goes from agency to agenev and 1 om individual to individual presenting his or her case, receiving assis tance, and deceiving generous hearted people as to the amount of yaid he gets and the condition he is in. A>bviously to make gifts of anv kind to such a person is to en courage him in the worst type of medicancy. Persons of this tvoe, unless they are out-of-town beg gars here to work the community, are always known to some of the welfare societies. Citizens and visitors who are approached for money, food, clothing, or medical assistance by whose ac tual condition is unknown to them can, if they wish, secure the name and address of the person aoplying and make inquiry of Miss Rebecca Hoskins, County Welfare Agent. (It is starring Janet Gaynor, Loretta Young 1 Constance Bennett, Simone Simon, and Don Ameche. • ) —. ■ - ■■ Basketball Tonight > Tryon high school boys and girls will play Sunny View tonight | at 7:30 in a doubleheader game at the Tryon gymnasium. This | will be the first Polk county game for the locals who have been play ing teams in Spartanbiurg and ’ Henderson counties. Lanier Club Tea The Lanier -club tea held at the Library on Wednesday afternoon was one of the most successful ever , given there. Over S4B was netted for the Library fund. Approxi ! mately 100 people enjoyed the occa sion. The Library was attractive [ ly decorated in blue and yellow and included Pride of China berries, ’ yellow jasmine in bue vases and blue candles in brass candle sticks. , An interesting feature of the event was the serving of chocolate cake, a favorite of former King Edward, VIII, made from an old Maryland | recipe used often by Mrs. Wallis ; Simpson at her home in London, England. The hostesses for the tea were Mrs. James B. Hester, Mrs. Thomas B. Main and Miss Annie Ravenel.
