Tryon Country Club
Re-Elects Officers
An interesting session of the
Tryon Country club was held
Thursday night at the club house
when the annual meeting of the
membership was hel dand reports
of achievement were heard. The
membership was held and reports
the good work done in building
the grass greens and in keeping
up the club property that the same
officers were returned as follows:
President, B L. Ballenger; Vice
president, Nelson Jackson, Jr.;
Secretary-treasurer, K. A. Bowen}
and Directors besides the Officers
are J. C. Kimberly, Julian Cal
hcun, C. H. Conrad, F. P. Bacon,
Mrs. Bernard Sharp, M. B. Flynn,
A vote of thanks was given Golf
Pro Larry Brooks for his faithful
work on the greens during the dry
season last summer.
Today’s Headlines
The flood situation in states
along the Ohio and Mississippi
rivers is very serious and the
American Red Cross is rushing
relief as quickly as possible. Thou
sands of people are homeless.
Radio broadcasts are being made
constantly from scenes of danger.
Seme areas of counties are com
pletely isolated by high water.
Chicago this morning reported
a temperature of 8 above zero,
and a heavy blanket of snow. Cali
fornia is suffering freezing weath
er.
The war situation in Spain is
about the same. The automobile
strike shows n 5 change. Citizens
are again ordered to flee.

Author of Paper
The American Cotton Manufac
turers Association has just issued
in pamphlet form a comprehensive
study of the cooperative program
of the cotton manufacturers and
the cotton farmers. The booklet
is a reprint of articles by Mel
bourne Smith of Tryon, published
in the Daily News Record. Mr.
Smith’s work shows what the
states are doing, results being ac
complished, plans used, how mills
are cooperating, and suggestions
for further work. Mr. Smith is
the Southern representative of
Fairchild Publication and the
pamphlet presenting his articles is
entitled “Upland Cotton Improve
ment in Quality and Staple in
Southeastern States” through co
operation of cotton farmers, cot
ton manufacturers, state and fed
eral cotton specialists
Service at Chapel
Rev. Smith of Chesnee, S.
C., will conduct services on Sun
day afternoon at 3 o’clock at the
Warrior Mountain Chapel.
BASKETBALL
Tryon Girls Athletic club play
ed an interesting game of basket
ball Thursday night and lost by
one point to the Columbus girls
by a! score of 17-16. On Wednes
day night at Trvon the local girls
defeated Sunny View 23-9 and the
Tryon boys defeated Sunny View
47-20. Manager J. V. Hall is very
much pleased with the work of
the Tryon teams and has expressed
his appreciation for the cooperation
of everyone.
