C., FRIDAY, FEB. 5, 1937 Donald Calross Peattie Addresses The Lanier Club I Tryonites were given a real treat on Thursday afternoon at the Lanier library when Donald Cul rcss Peattie, the noted author, gave six ehort -essays from his “Book of Hours”, which was com pleted this week after three months’ work and mailed to his publishers on Wednesday. Follow ing the address a large group from the audience gathered around the author to congratulate him on his new work. During the busi ness session, the president, Mrs. Harkness Smith, announced that Mr. Charles Ingalls was directing a Booth Tarkington play, “Clar ence”, which would be presented at the Tryon school |~rium the week of Feb. 22, and ■that the proceeds would be given the library. During the first week of March, Professor Spry of Converse college will give a con cert of chamber music with the violin, ’cello, and piano. Proceeds for this concert also for the li brary. New members joining the club were Dr. Helen Roberts, Mrs. J. T. Arledge, Mrs. Earl C. Ham mond and Mrs E. S. Parsons. Dur ing the social hour in the Holden Reading Room Mrs. Ralph Erskine and Miss Claire Bell -were the hos tesses and Mrs. G. L. Canfield and Mrs. Harkness Smith poured tea. The table was beautifully decorat ed with yellow daffodils and nicas and lighted yellow candles. Mr. Keels to Preach Boy Scout Sermon Rev. L. J. Keels, ipastor of the Tryon First Baptist church and a former Scoutmaster, will preach the annual Boy Scout sermon at the Tryon First Baptist church on Sunday week, February A4, in stead of this Sunday. Scoutmaster W. A. Schilletter and the Tryon Scout Troop No. 1 will attend in a body. Next Week National Boy Scout Week Tryon will join the nation next week, February 7-13, in celebrating National Boy Scout week, and the 27th anniversary of the incorpora tion of the Scout movement. Mayor E. E. Missildine has issued a proclamation which is published in this week’s Polk County News, pointing out the achievements of the Boy Scouts and recommending the cooperation of all citizens in observing Boy Scout Week for the purpose of strengthening the move ment here. President Roosevelt, honorary president of the Boy Scouts of America, will address by radio a message to all Boy Scouts at 5:30 p. m., on Monday, February Bth. Only $5.00 Is Needed To Make $1,500 for Red Cross Treasurer James B. Hester re ported today that the total dona tions from Polk county to the Red Cress fund for the flood sufferers was $1,495.83 of which $13.80 was the net amount received from the Sunday afternoon movie.
