Tryon’s Annual Horse
Show Gets Underway

Ideal weather greeted Tryon. to
day for its 12th annual Horse and
Hound Show which has been held
for the past 12 years without
postponment. Today, Harmon
Field is a colorful picture with
hounds and horses in beautiful
Pacolet Riders are present
from 12 States and at 9 o’clock
this morning 95 horses had been
entered in the show. Keen interest
is centered on the George D. Wick,
Jr. perpetual trophy which has
been won twice by Walter C. Hill,
and in the Biltmore Forest trophy
won twice by R. Horace Johnson of
Charlotte. The results of the show
will be published in this week’s
Polk County News.

Social activities in connection
with the Show included a recept
ion for the exhibitors and visitors
at the Tryon Country club on
Tuesday afternoon from 4 to 6:30
o’clock, followed by a buffet supper
at Sunnydale log cabin. The Horse
show ball, an annual event, was
held on Tuesday evening at Oak
Hall and was a delightful affair
with an unusually large attendance
Following the' Hors© show, Mr.
and Mrs. Ernst Mahler will enter
tain a large number of guests with
a buffet supper at Chinquapin
farm. On Thursday morning a hunt
breakfast will be given at Pine
Crest Inn. with Mr. and Mrs. Car
ter P. Brown as host and hostess.
Gar Burned
The Chevrolet Sedan of B. E.
Samples caught on fire Tuesday
night about 12 o’clock and was al
most destroyed except for the motor
The body was completely ruined.
The car was parked in the garage
when the fire occured. It is not
known how the fire started, ex
cept that it began in the back seat.
C. P. Rogers lost his new V-8
Ford Tuesday afternoon when the
roof of his garage fell in and
mashed the car flat to the seats.
Mr. Rogers had just gotton out of
the car a few minutes before.
W. M. Huck fell from his horse
while riding Monday afternoon, and
broke his right leg.
J. M. Monroe, reporting the vital
statistics for Tryon Township,
states that only one person died
during the month of Feburary. Pop
ulation about 2500.
Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt is
visiting in Asheville and stated
last night that she would leave
about noon today for an unknown
trip. She visited Hannon Field and
other places in Tryon on her last
trip to this section.
