The last <Sv,rsion of the Duke
Power Co., cooking school for col
ored people will be held tonight
at 7:30. At this time diplomas
will be awarded cooks making the
grade. The school has been very
successful under the direction of
Mrs. Frank Moore of Greenville.

Spartanburg announce their an
nual garden tour, April 29th, from
10 a. m., to 7 p. m. Many lovely
gardens of varied types in Spar
tanburg and vicinity will be open
to the public on that day. Start
ing point for the tour will be
from the lawn of the First Pres
k byterian church, Eai-t Main street,
where tickets will be on sale and
information and guides available.
Entire proceeds will be donated to
Camp Franklin, the Tubei’culosis
Associations summer camp for
children.

County Attorney Jack Arledge
started the political pot to boil
ing today when he filed his name
for the office of Mayor of Tryon
At the time of going to press he
was the only candidate for any
town office, and candidates have
only until Saturday to file. A
mayor, three councilmen and three
cemetery commissioners must be
selected.

Abernethys Buy In
Hunting Country
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Abernethy
of Bronxville, N. Y., have pur
chased a tract of land in the
hunting country adjoining the
newly acquired property of Mr.
ani Mrs. Jamcr- A. Blackwood,
which joins the Tower Hill prop
erty of Cliffox’d McDonald. The
Abernethy tract is known as
Burnt Chimney and is located on
the Ridge Road. The sale was
made thi-ough C. J. Lynch.

Mayor of Tryon
J. T. “Jack” Arledge filed to
day as a candidate for Mayor of
Tryon in the coming election to
be held on May 4. Mi’. Ai’ledgc
who is the junior member of the
law firm of Masrenbui’g, McCown
& Arledge, is a son of Clerk of
Court John A. Arledge of Colum
bus. He is a native of Polk
county, a graduate of Wake Foi’est
college with a law degree. He is
vice-president of the Tryon Rotary
club, a deacon in the First Baptist
chyrch, and a director of the St.
Luke’s Hospital Association. He
began his law career in Tryon
soon after graduation at Wake
Forest and has taken a leading
part in civic affairs since coming
to Tryon.
