Automobile Drivers

ford that he will be in Tryon at
the Town Hall on Monday, July 19,
to give examinations to persons
applying for driver’s licenses. The
examinations will be held between
8:30 a. m., and 12 noon.

Funeral services for John Ran
some Splawn, 69, who died sudden
ly Saturday morning following a
heart attack, were held Sunday
afternoon at 2 o’clock at the White
O’ak Baptist church in Mill Spring
with the pastor, Dr. Tilley and the
Rev. D. Ml McGeachy officiating.
The deceased is survived by his
widow, Mjrs. Ella Miitchell Splawn
and one son and three daughters,
John Splawn of Landrum, SI C..
Route 1; Mrs. Bertha Laughter, of
Landrum, Route 1. M]rs. Mary Ed
wards and Mrs. Noah Walker, of
Mil Spring. Also a brother, Will
Splawn and two sisters.
Judge Splawn was a native of
Polk county and had made his home
in Columbus for mrny years where
he was a prominent Justice of the
Peace.
McCOWN AT KIWANIS
The Tryon Kiwanis club will
meet on Tuesday at 1 p. m., at
otel Tryon with Vice-President R.
H. Brady in charge of the pro
gram. The chief speaker will be
Attorney M. R. McCown. who re
turned recently from a trip to
Bermuda with the North Carolina
State Bar Association.

Saluda Girl Drowns
In Hole In River
Saluda, July 11.—. Hattie Jones,
15-year-old daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. U. G. Jones, of Saluda, was
drowned near here today while
swimming in Green River.
Companions said the girl jumped
from a rock into a deep hole at
Green River cove, and drowned be
fore she could be rescued. William
Troutman, a member of the swim
ming party, was dragged under
when he attempted to rescue the
girl and had to be pulled from
the river.
Funeral services will be held this
afternoon at 4 o’clock at Friend
ship Baptist church near Saluda.
Miss Jones was a sister of Mrs.
Roger Ellison of Tryon.

Abandon Automobile
In Polk County
Columbus, July 10.—An automo.
bile, used as an escape car by a
gunman who killed a Lancaster
(S. C.) policeman last Sunday,
was found this morning in the
Copper’s Gap section of Polk coun
ty. Sheriff W. D. Hines reported
here, adding that the bandit had
been identified as a convict named
Smith who was one of a trio who
escaped from the North Carolina
state prison farm at Caledonia
last winter.
Sheriff Hines said the bandit had
been traced, along with his red
