Smith escaped convict, )and suspected of killing' a Lancas. ter (S. C.) policeman, and who fled to Cooper’s Gap, this county, Sunday a week ago where he abandoned a stolen car and hired Dan Ledbetter of that section to take him to Biltmore, was captured Tuesday night near Conway, S. C., after a 30-mile chase from officers. Lieut. Leo Jenkins, who came to Polk county last Sunday and took pictures of fingerprints on the car stated that they corresponded to Smith’s and that Smith did not deny that he was the man wanted. He left Polk county in company with a woman companion. Senator Robinson Is Found Dead Radio news reporter this morn )ing announced the death of U. S. Senator Joseph T. Robinson. He was found dead in his apartment at 8:15. Probably result of a heart attack. He was 65 years old. Had been in Congress from Ar kansas for 34 years. Democratic leader of the Senate and promin ently mentioned for the Supreme Court. Candidate for vice-presi dent in 1928. Sixty planes scan thousands of square miles of Pacific but find no trace of fliers officers believe are dead. '“Last chance” search for some sign of Amelia Earhart and Fred J. Marshall, Jr., age 12, whose daddy and mother bought the Ludlum place sometime ago. was a visitor to the Bulletin office Tuesday. Jim has a little press of his own at his home in Illinois . . . The new radio at Avant Electric Co., is still a won der to me. All you have to do to get the station you want is to get the station you want is to press a button opposite WBT or WWNC, etc., and the radio will tune itself . . . Blue Ridge Weav. ers have done almost the same thing with their display of greet ing cards. You don’t have to hunt thru a pile of cards to find what you want. Everything is indexed in such away that if it’s a birth day, fairewell, anniversary, etc 1 ., all you have to do is look in one place under the proper heading . . Bertha Blackwell, former Tryon school basketball star made her first trip on the train up the mountain the other day when she rode to Saluda. Many Tryonites who have always ridden in auto mobiles have missed the fun of riding the train up the mountain where it takes two big engines starting from Melrose ...
