Child specialists from many southern states will participate and lectures by prominent special ists and clinics on child disease will feature the session. The faculty will include special ists from North Carolina, South CaToliiia, Georgia, Alabama, Ten. nessee, Virginia, Louisiana and Florida. | “CURB” REPORTER Ruth Manville’s Cuban letter may look long, but you’ll enjoy every bit of it . . . Tryon’s Country club put on a gay appearance Sun day afternoon .... Went out to play tennis and both courts were occupied. The club house and golf links were entertaining guests . . . Ed Barber says that his cow which recently gave birth to twin calves is now giving 26 quarts of milk daily. Guernsey-Jersey breed . . . J. G. Monroe who recently re signed as registrar of vital statis tics for Town of Tryon is still the registrar for Tryon Township outside of the town limits. In Continued on Page Three 9 Miss Manville Writes From Havana, Cuba Miss Ruth Mlanville, daughter of M!r. and MJrs. E. Perry* Manville, of Tryon, and a student of Duke University, has written the follow ing interesting letter at the request of the editor: Concha No. 11, Havana, Cuba 23 julio 1937 Dear Mr. Vining: Now that I am about to leave, I’m just beginning to realize what a hold Cuba has on me. First there were the men who dove for pennies in the shark-infested har bor. It seemed a miracle that they were not eaten, but maybe sharks don’t like dark meat. Then after the boat docked, there was the drive through Havana. Parts of it look just like any other mod ern city. On the way home we stopped at the huge public market which takes up an entire block, and where everything from food and clothing to hardware and fur niture is sold. Near there are the places that tourists always head for. Sloppy Joe’s, Dirty Dick’s and SWder’s Antique Shop. The Prado is the main street, the fifth avenue of Havana. Every Sunday evening the entire 900,000 inhabi. tants of the city, turn} out in their Sunday best and stroll up and down it. It is as interesting as a circus to see them—the men have curly dark hair, long eye lashes, and wear perfume, the wo men are tougher-looking than the men.
