Fortieth Anniversary of
First Automobile Policy
Hartford. —The 40th anniversary
of the issuing of the first automo
bile liability policy occurs Feb. 1.
The historic contract was granted
by the Travelers to Dr. Truman
J. Martin, a physician at Buffalo,
N. Y., and was written in long
hand by Walter G. Cowles, who
is now a vice-president of che
company. The policy covered an
electric automobile which, when it
was bought by Dr. Martin in 1897,
w,as one of less than 100
vehicles registered in the Uni >
States. Dr. Martin paid a pre-l
mium of $11.25, to provide liability
of from $5,000 to SIO,OOO. The in
sured. Dr. Martin, died in New
York City in 1927. The under
writer, Mir. Cowles, is still an ac
tive official of the Travelers, which
he has served more than a half
century."
