ENTERED AS SECOND-CLASS MATTER AUGUST 20, 1928, AT THE POST OFFICE AT TRYON, N. C. UNDER THE ACT OF CONGRESS, MARCH 3, 1879 Qllje Glrgmi ®atlg JktUi'tin (The World’s Smallest Daily Newspaper) Vol. 11. Est. 1-31-28 Preview Today of Aiken Pictures A private preview of the paint ings of Chas. Aiken, the artist, be shown this afternoon at Mrs. B. King Couper’s Rock House Art Gallery. These pictures have • received much praise from critics all over the country. The Brook lyn Eagle said: “Especially noted in the group are views of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado, which the artist has painted from an unusual angle. They might be described as closeups of the subject and are painted look ing down into the canyon from the summit. Curiously, in concentrat ing on this single aspect, the vast ness of the subject is more con vincingly presented than if the tra ditional panoramic composition had been attempted. Incidentally, the design and color of the rock stratas resolve themselves into fascinating abstract patterns. “The flower still-life’s also in _ eluded in the exhibition, again j?vince the artist’s sensitive appre ciation of his subject, which a sure draftsmanship and a certain aus terity of color and design prevent from becoming sweetened or sen timentalized.” The exhibition will be open to ‘he public every afternoon from March 16th to April 2nd. y y SENIOR PLAY AT COLUMBUS WEDNESDAY The Senior class play of the Stearns high school will be present ed on Wednesday evening at 8 o’clock at the Stearns auditorium in Columbus. TRYON, N C., TUESDAY. MARCH 15, 1938 Try on Girl Famous For Her Beauty The Washington (D. C.) Sun day Herald carried four attractive pictures of Mjss Avilla Hinckley- Brooks because of her growing fame as a beautiful girl. The Herald says: “There is a girl out in Arlington county so beautiful that she gets letters from women all over the country asking her how she got that way. She is Avilla Hinckley-Brooks, 17-year old freshman at Arlington Hall school. Thi s year judges at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival took one look at her wavy blond hair and heavily lashed blue eyes, and unanimously named her queen of the festival. Miss Hinckley- Brooks’ conquests do not rest on beauty alone. She is the best all round athlete at the school. She can turn a neat figure 8 on a pair of skates, and can perform a treacherous slalom on skiis. In ad dition to being an expert swimmer, tennis player and golfer she can take jumps on horseback with ease and confidence.” Miss Hinckley-Brooks’ Trvon home is in Gillette Woods, and is •’ow occupied by Mr. and Mrs. E. I’.. Hopkins and family. FLAG TOURNAMENT On Friday and Saturday of this week two flag tournaments will be played at the Tryon Country club. One for men and one for women.
