Church Burned
The Sandy Spring Baptist
church in lower Polk county, was
destroyed by fire early this morn
ing, according to a report to the
office.
Grays Buy Green’s
Big Kudzu Farm
Mr. and Mrs. Leßoy D. Gray
of Toledo. Ohio have purchased
the old Dick Edwards' place near
Columbus, but more recently Dr.
W. S. Green’s famous kudzu farm.
The farm consists of 185 acres.
Mir. and Mirs. Gray spent the past
two months in the Uchtman cot
tage on Lynn road. They plan to
come to Tryon this summer and will
raise cattle on the new farm. The
sale was made through G. Harri
son Bridgeman. Dr. Green bought

a model kudzu farm with seed
Japan. He made such a
Success with it that the federal
Government wanted to buy his en
tire output for its forestry pro
gram and Dr. Green is having to
send checks back to customers as
far as Texas and Oklahoma,
far away as Texas and Oklahoma.

Annual Meet of Lanier Club
The business meeting of the club
was held at the Library Thursday
afternoon. At the reading of the
reports of the various committees,
a most comprehensive report was
submitted by the Librarian Miss
Mary Carpenter. This will be
printed in The Polk County News.
The following officers were elect
ed for the coming year: Mrs.
Harkness Smith, president; Mrs.
Walter M. Howell, vice-president;
Mrs. Bernard Sharp, treasurer;
Mrs. E. E. Missildine, secretary.
The four directors Are: Mrs. R.
M. McCown, Mrs. Ralph Erskine
Mrs. Montgomery Whaling. Mrs.
G. H. Holmes.
A special committee was ap
pointed to take charge of the re
roofing of the library building—as
follows: Mrs. Bernard Sharp,
chairman; Mrs. Samuel Bingham,
Sr., Mrs. Carroll Rogers.
■This work will begin shortly.
Mrs. Rogers announced that a
benefit card party would be held
at the library on the evening of
May 12th.

in the Pea Ridge section Thurs
day. It is reported that the raid
on the plant caused to be destroy
ed 1,800 gallons of beer and 20
gallons of liquor. It is also said
that this ’still was a “dry land
outfit", using water from a well
nearby.
The officers reported that the
still was not in operation at the
time of the raid. .
