Est. 1-31-28 Stearns Hi Held Columbus, April 25.—Stearns High S-chool held their closing ex ercises last night before an aud ience that packed the commodious auditorium to capacity. Judge Thomas L. Johnson of Asheville was heard in an unusally happy vein as he charted the gates through which the pupils must pass to successful, fruitful life. After the address the following medals were presented; Science, to Howard Landis, Scholarship, to Dorothy Gilbert, English, to Helen Cole, Atheletics. to Harlan Mcln tyre, Citizenship, to M'ary Eliza beth McFarland Debaters Medal, to Janet Holbert, while the reci tation medal won on last Thursday night was presented to Vallie Rae Ashley. First prize for first year Economics was won by Enola second by Geneieve Gos nell, second Year Home Economics first prize to Mjeryle Constance and second prize to Dorothy Thompson. The most coveted of all the awards, the “honor” trophy, went to Miss Helen Tallant of the graduating class. This trophy is a handsome pedestal of wood, with nlobe and torch of metal topping it off. On the wooden base is a bronze placque on which the name of the honor student will be etched each year. The trophy was rented to the school by the Hurff- Jones Co., internationally known jewelers, thru their Mr. O. E. Bass of Hendersonville. It will re main the property of the school and each year the name of the honor student will be added to the scroll. TRYON, N C., TUESDAY, APRIL 26. 1938 Young O’Shields Landrum. April 25.—Funeral services for Young O’Shields, 69 well known farmer of Landrum, route 2, who died at his home yes terday. will be conducted at 4 o’clock Tuesday afteroon at the Fairview Baptist church by the Rev. C. B. Prince, the Rev. T. E. Reid and the Rev. Broadus Belue. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be C. Y. Carruth, C. E. Carruth, Elford Barnett, O. C. Brady. Grady Set tle and Broadus Woffard. The honorary escort will be com posed of the following men, who are asked to meet at the church at 4 o’clock Tuesday: Fred S. Jackson, J. G. Landrum. B. F. Thompson, D. W. Lowe. A. G. Barton, C. S. West, R. K. Walker and Robert Carruth. Mr. O’ Shields was born and liv ed his entire life in the Landrum community. He was a deacon in the Fairview Baptist church for 25 years, and for the past nine years had been a member of the First Baptist church of Landrum. He had been in declining health for about ten years but had been seriously ill for only four days. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Theodore and John O’Shields both of Landrum, route 2, and Paul and Stroud O’Shields, of New York city; three daughters. Mrs. W. S. O’Sullivan of New York, M*rs. J. L. Wilson of Campobello and Miss Willie O’Shields of Landrum route 2; three sisiters, Mrs. M!artha Mior ris of Polk county, N. C., and MVs. Mamie Wofford and Mrs. Emma Barnett, both of Llandrum. route 2; and three grandchildren.
