Est. 1-31-28 Cowan’s Celebrates Fifth Anniversary John Cowan, the Horatio Alger groceryman who started business on a small scale and with a 30c advertisement in the Bulletin is celebrating his sth anniversary today with a Daee advertisement. Soon after Mr. Cowan started in business during the depression he was robbed by a burglar, then was forced out of his building because somebody else wanted it. but now he has his own building combined with a meat market and the theatre building next to it. A few weeks ago he built a large warehouse for his growing feed and fertilizer business, and only last week bought the Tryon Case. During the five years he has bought a home and has dropped the horse and wagon delivery system for the modern truck. He says be hopes someday to be one cf Tryon’s leading business men. Burial Association Ready By Thursday F. K. McFarland of the Mc- Farland Mutual Burial Associa tion stated this morning that his association would be ready for business on Thursday. Another association from outside the county has entered the local field, but it will be impossible for members to belong to both associations so Mr. McFarland wishes to let the pub lic know that he will be ready for members on Thursday. TRYON, N C., TUESDAY, MAY 10. 1938 Former Editor Polk County News Dead , Clarence Bush, 67, former editor publisher of The Polk County News, died of pneumonia today at 8 o’clock at his home in Ashe ville. Funeral services will be held Thursday, according to in formation received here by Mrs. C. J. Lynch. Mr. Bush had been with the Asheville Citizen since saving Tryon for about 15 years. He was a native of Kentucky. His widow survives. James M. Howard Landrum, May 9.—James Milton Howard. 21, died at 11:45 o’clock today in a Spartanburg hospital following an illness of two months- Mr. Howard, the son of the Rev. A. T. Howard, pastor of the Hick ory Grove Baptist church in Polk ■ ounty. N. C., is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ethel Dill Howard; three brothers Lloyd and Land :um Howard of Landrum, route >; and Alvin Howard. Ashland, Ohio; and five sisters, Mirs. Caro line Gosnell. Asheland, Ohio; Mrs. Adline Ward, Landrum route 2; Mrs. Lena Duncan, Mrs. Clarence Grigg and Miss Ida Howard of Landrum route 3. Funeral services will be conduct ed Wednesday at the First Baptist church at Landrum, the hour to he announced later. The body will e at the residence after 11 a. n., Tuesday.—Spartanburg Herald County WPA Supervisor B. E.
