Est. 1-31-28 A local product rapidly gaining favor is the verraiculite insulation produced by Bill Jackson & Co., at their plant near Gowansville in upper Greenville county in sight of Hogback Mountain. Vermiculite is a mica substance that is dug from the ground and suddenly thrown over a hot flame which ex plodes it and makes it as light as a feather. You can easily lift a hull sack full with one hand. The Ballenger Company was being in sulated with it last night . . . The Banty Rooster took a swing on the chain in front of the store yester. day and flew to a beam on the the second story above the awning and let out a loud crow .... Spar tanburg may get $800,000.00 for "lum clearance .project .... To day is the birthday of Postmaster W. H. Stearns and of the late Senator J. C. Fisher . . . Rev. Hoyt Blackwell elected president of Mars Hill college to succeed Hr. R. L.' Moore, resigned . . . 50 were injured yesterday in Detroit police-strikers fight . . . . The Nelson Jacksons leave in a few days for an extended stay in California this summer .... TRYON, N C., FRIDAY, MAY 27, 1938 Monday Is National Memorial Day Monday being National Memorial Day the post offices and banks will be closed all day. People needing change and checks cashed will have to get busy " Saturday morning before 12 o’clock or wait until Tuesday. The same sugges tion applies to those needing stamps for letters to be mailed before Tuesday. The post office closes every Saturday afternoon. Patrons Jiave only a half day from Friday to Tuesday in which to do business with Uncle Sam this week. Dr. D. P. McGeachy Coming Here Next Week Dr, D. P. McGeachy, pastor of the Decatur, Ga., Presbyterian church for the past 20 ye.ars will come to Tryon on June 2 as the guest of his brother, the Rev. D. M. McGeachy, and will conduct a series of meetings for one week. Services will be held daily in the Afternoon at 3:30 and in the eve ning at 8 o’clock at the Tryon Presbyterian church. The public is invited. Dr. McGeachy conducted meeting here about six years ago and was very popular with mem. bers of the various denominations in the community as well as with hjs own. His church in Decatur .has 1,300 members and is the church attended by most of the students of Agnes Scott college. He comes to Western North Caro lina every summer and has a home at Montreat near Asheville.
