Est. 1-31-28 TRYON, N C., TUESDAY, MJAY 31, 1938 Extract of Negro School Report The 16th annual report of the Jffryon Colored School- was made Principal L. R. Wells this week to Superintendent W. A. Schillet ter. It showed a decrease in at tendance due to measles, but an increase in enrollment of nine to 209. Progress made in creating a reading habit and use of library. Athletics were off compared with last year. The girls basketball team lost only two ganies. The boys won 8 and lost 5. Girls outfitted with new uniforms. The Dramatic club of the English de partment presented “Where’s Grandma,” a successful play on May 5. The Science department showed periodic field trips, book let making and a visit to Dudley Smith’s Brookhill Poultry Farm. Entire school attended the Coun ty Fair at Spartanburg. All fac ulty members joined State Teach es Association. The Boy Scout progressing nicely and ex pects to attend the Colored Camp at Kings Mountain. The Home Economics had an interesting ex hibit of things made in the school. The Dunbar Library reports gifts of many books and an encyclope dia. The P.-T. A. beautified the grounds, put in a telephone for nine months and bought a S2O school Sell. Building reported in good shape but in need of paint. The faculty presented a play, “He’s My Pal”. The Board of Health examined every student and in structions followed where recom mended. The Rev. Eugene Avery of Rutherfordton gave the bac calaureate sermon and Dr. E. A. Continued on Back Page Memorial In Smokies For Zeb Weaver Thousands of friends of Con gressman Zebulon Weaver have signed a petition to have a moun tain in the Great Smokies named for Mr. Weaver in recognition of his services to the district and nation. He has had an outstand ing record of achievement in secur ing worthwhile projects for this section and he worked hard to get the Smoky Mountain National Park. Lee Green Lee Green, 72, died Monday noon at the home of S. B. Edwards in Tryon. Burial service today at Peniel church. Mr. Green was a native of Polk county and was wellknown throughout this section. He had been living in Tryon for the past two months. Romance In A New Setting Miss Betty Doubleday, teacher of the Tryon Seventh Grade grad uation class will direct the grade’s annual play tonight at the school auditorium. “Dowry of Colum bine”, a fantasy, will be a per formance full of humor, music and dancing; romance in an entire ly new setting—at the. foot of the rainbow, then happiness threaten ed by blustering buccaneers.
