Stifled Verses For
A Childrens’ Party
By Hilda von Siller
“Sweet Childrens’ voices floating
on the air. ...”
(I hear the little demons every
where!) —
“In merry laughter, ever more
and more—”
(For heaven’s sake, just go and
close that door!
And when this week-end’s over,
I'll be glad—
Unless, by that time, they have
driven me mad!)
“How blithely, gaily they come
trooping in—”
(Great Skuott! —can just four
youngsters make that DIN!)
“To welcome little guests with
graceful glee”—
(Their shrieking voices fairly go
through me!
I give it up: I cannot rhyme a
word!
They beat the worst that I have
ever heard!
Don’t ask a birthday vferse, I beg
of you!
I'd sooner write one sitting in the
Zoo!
(Or in my room on Melrose
Avenue.)
Just NOW it seems the loudest
snot in town:)
