Johnson Work began this morning on the replacement of the narrow Howes- Conner bridge over Pacolet River, with a new and wider span. The apcident Saturday, that placed one person in the hospital, further emphasized the need for a safer bridge at this point . . . if any further emphasis was needed .... Senatorial-minded Governor Olin D. Johnston, of South Carolina, spoke briefly to the voters in near by Landrum Tuesday. According to reports of some of those pres ent, the “Fs” were placed well for ward in all parts of the address. .... The past few days of reas onably clear weather have given rise to hopes that the “Dog Days” grainy spell has been broken, and [fthat the noticeable slump in both business and travel due to the ex cessive rainfall, will disappear. . . . In the Current issue of the Duke Power Mjagazine, and under a Glen W. Naves by-line is a word discription of the Bulletin and also a picture of the editor, who is at present, with his family down at Cherry Grove Beach, be ing contaminated with the sun shine and sea breezes of this dew lightful resort. A card from them received today says: “We are having a great time. We’ve been in water at least twice a day. Going out in \ boat several miles —-Continued on Back Page —- New Registration Is Galled of Voters In Polk County According to a statement by telephone to the Bulletin from John T. Coates, Jr., of Saluda, chairman of the Polk County Elec tion Board, a new registration of the county’s eligible voters will be taken before the General Election in November. Chairman Coates said that the election board, composed of Chair man Coates; Henry Thompson, of Mill Spring and Nesbit Walker, Republican member, also of Mill Spring, in a meeting at the court house on the first monday in August went on record as unani mously favoring a new registra tion in the county, and that ac cording to law, it must be taken at least 30 days before the fall election. Mr. Coates also stated that the board, in granting a re-registra tion, was complying with numer ous requests by members of both the Democrat and Republican par ties of the county. - ... .. &■■■■■■ Major Bernard Sharp At Rotary On Friday Major Bernard Sharp will ad dress the Tryon Rotary club at its regular meeting at Sunnydale Fri day at 7 p. m. He will speak on the “Situation In the Far East.” Douglas Blois has charge of the program. PWA building bill passes sec ond reading at special session of Assembly in Raleigh.
