Est. 1-31-28 TRYON, N, C., TUESDAY AUGUST 16, 1938 Hospital News Miss Ruth Bryan had a tonsil operation on Mlonday at St. Luke’s .hospital. %/ William Watson of Landrum underwent an appendicitis opera tion at St. Luke’s hospital on Monday. Bill Ward underwent an appen dicitis operation this morning at St. Luke’s hospital. Mjrs. John Adams of Plamasola, Fla., underwent an operation this morning at St. Luke’s hospital. Luther Morgan of Saluda is in St. Luke’s hospital for treatment, Mrs. Broadus Ross and baby were dismissed from the hospital today. GO TO BEACH Mir. and Mrs. M. R. McCown and son, Vance, M,rs. R. H. Milli kin and daughter, Miss Dorothy, and Misses Ruby Alice and Anne are spending a week at Ocean Drive Beach, S. C. MELTON—JACKSON Mr. and Mirs. J. Mi. Mlelton wish to announce the marriage of their daughter, Miss Blanche Melton, to Mr. Clarence Jackson of Mill Spring. Miss Melton has made her home in Asheville for almost two years. The bride will make her home in Polk county for awhile with the exception of her work in Ashe ville. The bride, and groom will take their honeymoon trip to Flori da this fall. Wins Prize In Kelvinator Contest Miss Leila Wilson was today notified that she has been awarded a cash prize in the nation-wide Kelvinator Home Economics Insti tute Contest, sponsored by the Nash Kelvinator Corporation of Detroit. A check for SIO.OO will be presented to Miss Wilson by the Duke Power Company, Tryon, local dealers for Kelvinator Elec trical Appliances. The national prizes in this con test totaled $15,000.00 of which the first prize was $2,000.00 and the second prize $1,000.00 in cash. Contestants were required to write their personal experiences with five outstanding features of Kelvinator engineering. Howes-Conner Bridge Work Began Monday Preliminary work, preparatory to the replacement of the narrow bridge across Pacolet River north of Tryon on the Asheville-Spar_ tanburg highway, began on Mon day morning by the state highway department. The new span is expected to be completed within 60 days. It will be of arched concrete. Picnic At 7 P. M. The Kiwanis picnic will be held this evening at 7 o’clock at Lake Lanier Inn dock. Mbst of the members will be there earlier spreading the tables, making lemonade, playing games, or swim ming.
