Est. 1-31-28 “CURB” REPORTER That distinguished looking white bearded -gentleman seen on Trade street Tuesday was F. D. Fox, author and writer of the Blackie Bear stories. He was in company with his radio announcer and was looking for B. L. Ballenger, whom he had not seen in ten years. . . . Kenneth A. Bowen is representing Polk county members of the Uni versity of North Carolina alumni who are to meet on Friday at their third annual rally in Ashe ville .... Major W. A. Schilletter, a former citizen of Clemson, S. C., had callers a few days ago looking for hooked rugs to go in the noted John C. Calhoun man sion at Clemson .... The Southern Railway is advertising bargain ex jgiAcursion fares so low that most any |r/one can go to the seashore. This ' week on SatuTday coach tickets are available to Charleston, S. C., THURSDAY, AUG. 25, 1938 Rippy Home Is Razed By Fire The two-story home of Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Rippy at Lynn was completely destroyed by fire from a lightning bolt on Wednesday evening about 7:30 o’clock. The fire grew so rapidly that most of the household things were de stroyed before they 'could be re moved. Tryon Fire Department and neighbors responded but little could be done to save the house for lack of water supply. The fire truck chemical tank saved the barn and prevented the fire from spread ing. Mrs. Rippy, who was seve rely shocked, was taken in an ambulance to the home of her sister. Miss Edna Jones, in Tryon. The loss was partially covered by insurance. Mistrial Ordered In Murder Case In the case of the accidental murder of Paul Ritchie by auto mobile charged to Lonnie Payne and Sewell Freeman in Polk County Superior Court, Judge Will Pless has ordered a mistrial in order to allow the prosecution and defense to make a financial settle ment out of court. Flag Tournament Edgar Rowe announces that a flag tournament will be held at the Tryon Country club on Saturday and Sunday of this week. Entry fee 25c. 18 holes to play. Prizes for winners in all classes.
