Saluda Crowns Queen
Os Apple Show
Saluda, Sept. 23. This little
mountain town, proud of both its
apples and its beautiful girls, ac
claimed a new queen on Fridav
night.
Miss Doris Cary-Elwes, with ap
propriate ceremonies, was crown
ed queen of the second annual
Saluda Apple Festival. The cor
onation ball was in the high school
gymnasium.
“Her Majesty” is the daughter
of the Rev. H. Cary-Elwes rector
of the Episcopal Church of Trans
figuration, and Mrs. Cary-Elwes.
She succeeds Miss Frances Pace
as the festival ruler. Selection
was by popular vote.
The green hills hereabouts, soon
to be tinted with autumn colors,
resounded with the old dance
tunes of the mountaineer during
the ball, for square dancing had
its rightful place on the evening’s
program. Mlusic was bv Brook
shire’s string band, from Hender
son county. The event was the
highlight of the festival program.
The festival closed with a com
munity sing at 8 o’clock on Satur
day night, probahly in the Com
munity Hall, near the steep tracks
of the Southern Railway. Visiting
groups will enliven the occasion.
“I never had so much fun in
my life as I have experienced in
Saluda this summer,” said a young
man who came here in the spring.
Everybody has made him feel at
home.
The apple show, being held in
the Community Hall, is equally as
good as that of last year. This is

Registration Called Off

The letters state that the time
is too short for a new registration
and that the majority of people
who asked for the new registration
now ask that the books be purged
so as to strike off the absentees
who have been voting in the coun
ty illegallv. Mrs. Cathey stated
that the Governor has said that
he will call for a state-wide re
registration in 1939.
The Board after discussing the
matter has decided to call off the
new registration in as much as
the Governor will call one in 1939
and purge the registration books
in each township in the county.
The County Board of Elections
will sit with the registrar and
judges in each precinct and super
vise the purging of the illegal
voters.
The purge will begin as soon as
possible so as to have the names
of the illegal voters stricken off
