Est. 1-31-28 Gowansville Man Slain, Son Held James Marion Greene, 48-year old farmer and the father of 11 children, was killed about 6 p. m. Tuesday at his home northwest of Gowansville in upper Greenville i county by a shotgun charge fired j at close range. An Associated Press dispatch i from Greenville stated that j Greene’s 19-year-old son, Loren, surrendered to officers and was placed in the Greenville county jail in connection with the fatality. Coroner George W. MbCoy, of Greenville county said he would hold an inquest at 3 p. m. Friday. The dispatch stated that Mc- Coy said he was told that Greene uttered a threat and ordered Lor en from the room. The son left the room, the coroner said he j was informed, and an instant later | the barrel of a 12-guage shotgun was poked through the door and I the charge from the weapon tore " into the rear of Greene’s head. The shooting was investigated by Coroner McCoy and Deputy Sher iffs Frank Reid, Pralo Wood and H. C. Harrison, Greenvilp. county. Greene was born and ( ired in the Big Level sectiom) f Polk county, N. C., and was the son of the late Jesse and Mary Work man Greene. He is survived by his wife, the former MJiss Ester Gilbert; six sons, Hiollis, Loren, Toy, Lafayette, Carol and Ray Greene, ail of near Gowansville; five daughters, Mrs. Anlo Roberson of Campobello, Mrs. Isabella Gosnell and Misses Jose phine, Myrtle and Inez Greene, all of near Gowansville; and three grandchildren. TRYON, N C., WEDNESDAY, DEC. 28,1938 Town Tags Out Town Manager C. H. Helms stated this morning that the new auto and truck license plated re quired of all motor vehicle owners in the Town of Tryon, are now on sale at the Town Office. The new j plates conform in color and j length with the new state license plates. They have aluminum fig ures and letters on a maroon back- I ground. The plates for the Town of Tryon will cost a dollar, the same as last year. Personality Speaker at Rotary On Friday Rev. Wilbur L. Caswell, rector of St. Paul’s church at Yonkers, N. Y,., and seminary classmate of Dr. George F. Taylor of Tryon, will be the guest speaker at the Tryon Rotary club on Friday at 1 ip. m., at Sunnydale. Mir. Caswell | is a prominent speaker, editor and author of a number of books and religious plays. James B. Hester will be in charge of the program. The Costume Ball Plans are all set for the first big costume ball in years at the Oak Hall hotel tonight Lefty Flynn as master of ceremonies is preparing an entertaining floor show to be held at 10 o’clock. The grand march will begin at 9 o’clock and only those in costume will be allowed in the parade. Prizes and a variety of fun. Home Burned The residence of Joe Walker* colored, on Pacolet Heights, was destroyed by fire Tuesday night. The six room house was partially covered by insurance. • .
