Costume Ball Is
Gay Affair
One of the most attractive dances
seen in Tryon in years was the
Ttostume ball at Oak Hall hotel on
evening. The Grand
March was a colorful event with
Spanish, Dutch, German, Scotch
and costumes of other nationalities
in the parade. The judges were
Mrs. G. L. Canfield, Mrs. Carter
Brown, Mrs. Frederick Gignoux
and Mrs. Royse Jackson. They ad
mitted great difficulty fn choosing
the winners from such a large
number of attractive costumes.
First prize went to Mr. and Mrs.
Allen Jervey, Jr. Mrs. Jervey wore
a costume of Christmas greetings
and Mr. Jervey’s costume had the
picture of a Christmas tree on the
front and a fireplace, with stock
ings hanging from the mantel on
the back. Very clever. Honorable
mention was given Donald Wing,
dressed just like those mountain
men you see in the Esquire, wear
ing long black beard, a false nose,
p cob pipe, a gun in one hand and
leading a hound dog with the oth
er. He was a scream. Miss Hope
Rogers, wearing a beautiful old
fashioned gown of her grand
mother’s, Miss Elizabeth Avant
wearing a beautiful dress of the
blue heavens, Miss Betty Double
day as a Spanish senorita, Miss
Ruth Lincoln, in a gorgeous, blue,
colonial dress and white wig,
“Chuck” McLean as Happy New
Year, Carol Leonard as Dopey, and
Walter Newman as an Arab chief
tan, all came in for honorable
mention from the judges. It was
a nice party and bound to be re
peated next year. Bill Daven
