Est. 1.31.28 Basketball Tonight The Tryon high basketball teams will play Cedar Springs Institute in what promises to be a very in teresting game. The athletic asso- ciation is anxious to have as large jCV crowd as possible out to see the .game. The visitors will be paying their second visit to Tryon, having been here about two years ago. The girls will open play at 7:30 with the boys playing at 8:30. Referees: Culler (Appalachian!. Heiser (Providence); Scorer, Ear gle (Newberry). Noah Guffey, 52 Noah Guffey, 52, of Lynn, passed away early this morning at St. Luke’s hospital following a stroke suffered several days ago. Mr. Guffey is survived by his widow and several children. Funeral arrangements were not complete at time of going to press. <. . JACKSON TO ADDRESS X^ARENT-TEACHERS Dr. W. P. Jackson/ former field secretary of the National Recrea tion Association, will address the Tryon Parent-Teacher association at their meeting at the school auditorium on Monday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock. Dr. Jackson is a very entertaining speaker and will have for his subject, “Play and Character Building.” The hostesses for the afternoon are Mrs. J. S. Cromer, Mrs. M. G. Brand, Mrs. G. H. Bridgeman, Mrs. Sam McClure, Mrs. D. A. Shields and Mrs. F. W. Sprague. The Girl Scouts will assist in serving tea. Rogers, represen tative from Polk county in the North Carolina Gereral Assembly, writes interesting letter from Raleigh; i “Dear Seth: “The meeting of the State Legis lature is now in full swing. The committees of the House and j Senate have been appointed, and ! the Legislative machinery of the j £ ! tate has begun to grind away, i We are having delightful weather, | and the past ten days have been | as balmy as mid-winter days in j Florida or Porto Rico. The first i few days of the session were given | over to the organization of the j Legislature for its work, and to i affairs of a social nature. On last i Thursday the Governor held a A j ception, to which the members of the Legislature and their wives I were invited guests. On Saturday n’ght was held the Jackson Day dinner, at which A. B. (Happy) Chandler, Governor of Kentucky, was the guest speaker. This din ner was attended by over 300 Tar Heels, and was a most interesting occasion. On this morning (Wed.) Frances Perkins, Secretary of I«abor in the President’s cabinet, addressed a joint session of both house. By the way, this is the first session of the Legislature in some years, in which the fair sex has no representation ih either house of the State Legislature. On last Thursday the Governor ad dressed a joint session of the Legislature, and delivered his message.
