Granted Pardon
Retiring Governor Olin D. John-
of South Carolina extended
■Executive clemency to 29 prisoners
the state yesterday (Tuesday)
on his last day in office.
Among those who received par
dons, paroles or commutations
were Dr. R. H. Wilds of Lkmd
rum. Dr. Wilds was granted a full
pardon after serving half of an
18 months sentence for embezzel
ment at Spartanburg in April
1938. Charges resulting in his
conviction grew out of an alleged
shortage in funds of the town of
Landrum while Dr. Wilds served
the town as clerk.
Large Distilleries
Are Destroyed
Constables C. R. Bradley and
H. L. Wilson destroyed a large
distilling plant in the Pea Ridge
and one in the Cooper’s
township, near Lake Adger.
A large quantity of beer and some
whiskey was destroyed by the
officers at each place.
It was stated that one of the
’stills was just ready to be fired up
when the officers arrived. Arrests
are expected of the operators of
one of the ’stills.
Explanation
The Tryon Theatre personnel has
been asked the question over and
over: “Why ‘The Dawn Patrol’
was on for only one day?” We
agree that this is a reasonable

The Pirates Are
Coming to Town
Yessir, the pirates, those brave
swaggering and ruthless gentle
men of the sea (?) are coming to
j town. But like all good pirates,
! they come suspended at the end
lof a rope or ropes. No monkey
j business this time.
| They do exactly as they should;
| entertain you with that grand ad
! venture of the sea, “Treasure Is
| land,” in a new kind of show, a
! Marionette show.
; A troupe of Tony Sarg’s Mar
j ionettes will be presented at the
| Parish House, Friday, matinee and
I evening in a puppet show version
| of “Treasure Island.”
| A puppet stage will be set up in ,
the regular stage, and here the
puppet pirates, diminutive figures
almost one-third the size of a
human being, and having all the
essential joints of the original
model, and dressed in correct cos
tume, will plot, fight and perhaps,
“walk the plank”, for your en
joyment.
The puppets are manipulated
j from above the scenes by means
| of strings in the hands of skilled
puppeteers who also speak and sing
! for the characters on the stage,

new, but old, form of entertain
ment by coming to the show, either
Friday afternoon or night, and we
are sure you will enjoy it, whether
