Red Cross Service
At a meeting of the Polk Coun
ty Chapter of the American Red
Cross yesterday afternoon the
treasurer, J. B. Hester, reported
a cash balance of $621.51 as of
December 31st. Expenses for
civilian relief for the first seven
teen days of January amounted to
$89.58, leaving a balance of $531.93
to date. Mrs. George Cathey,
chairman of the Home Service
Committee, stated that during the
last quarter, two emergency re
lief cases had called for the pay
ment of the cost of two roofs on
houses for white families in dis-
tress. The Chapter bought a
■■wooden leg for a white man and is
food to the family of
a Negro man whose leg was am
putated. Other services in the
last quarter included children’s
teeth extraction, the furnishing of
glasses to two school children who
are nearly blind, the supplying of
medicine, bandages, underwear,
shoes, layettes, bed-clothing and a
mattress in cases where the need

public school teachers. The chap
ter furnished transportation for
an ex-soldier to a Veteran’s hos
pital and is supplying his family
with food during his absence.
Mrs. Jed L. Washburn and John
L. Washburn left yesterday for
several weeks’ stay in Florida.
