It Can Happen Here
And it did. Fred collapsed on
the job. It was not that the work
was too hard. It was WPA work
and not too strenuous for a well
man. A wife and six young chil
dren were dependent on him and
he worked until he dropped. Once
he had owned a pressing club; but
the depression closed that. Both
he and his wife had then tried to
find employment but the people
who might have taken at least one
of them were doing their own work
and nothing could be found. The
last resort was to go to “the re
lief” and there this family was
forced to go. The Superintendent
of Public Welfare certified Fred
for a WPA project and the family
could eat.
That is, they could, until he
collapsed at work three years ago.
Then he was taken to the hospital
where it was found that Fred had
tuberculosis of the stomach. That
meant no more working for Fred
and no food for those six children
and the wife. Now the Helping
Hand came to the rescue of this
family in desperate straits. Milk
was provided for the sick husband
and food for his family for months.
Eventually Fred’s condition im
proved sufficiently to allow Alice,

his wie, to leave the house and
look for a job. Again the Helping
Hand stretched out to find a place
for her at $8 per week.
Better days came. Fred con
tinued to improve in health and
he and Alice decided to buy, on
time, a cabin and two acres of
land in the country, keep a pig
and raise a garden as well as those
six children. Shortly after this
move Fred found himself a job
at which he earned $7 a week.
With a steady income of sls a
week, a home, a pig, and a
den, this\ family of eight has
entirely self-supporting for
now and recently financed an op
eration for the necessary removal
of the tonsils of one child.
The help which generous Tryon
people gave through the Helping
Hand (our private welfare agency)
to this self-respecting negro fam
ily has saved it without destroy
ing that spirit of independence
necessary to the social well-being.
