Est. 1-31-28 TRYON, N C„ WEDNESDAY, JAN. 25, 1939 CURB REPORTER The Adams-Millis basketeers are going to tackle the strong Victor team from Greer, S. C., tonight at the Try on school gym . . . When the fire destroyed the Toy Shop building last Friday it also re moved a large U. S. Department of Commerce airplane direction sign painted on the roof of the building. The sign bore a direc tion compass and the word TRY ON in big 14-foot letters. Tryon being in an airlane, on the high way, railroad and at the foot of the mountains is a goofl direction point for aviafors who have been flying over here with increasing frequency the past year . . . Get- Ong back to the Florida trip we ent via Columbia, S. C., where the legislature was in session in the capitol which still shows scars made by Sherman’s cannon balls. Had lunch; then on to Savannah, Ga., where we spent the night. It rained all the way to the Georgia line. Savannah reminded us of General Oglethorpe and the settling of Georgia as the last of the 13 colonies. The city has a commercial atmosphere being a large ocean shipping point -for naval stores, cotton, lumber, sugar, paper pulp, etc. Many of the streets had a run-down-at-the-heel look and dated back to 17 some thing. One beautiful street was said to be the longest street of palms in the world and on it were Continued on Back Page Tryon Boys Down Flat Rock Boys, 24-18 In two games played at the Flat Rock gym last night, the Tryon high team split a double header —with the girls of Tryon losing 49 to 6, while the Tryon boys played excellent ball to win their game by the score of 24 to 18. The Flat Rock girls having a team with superior height and re serves had things their own way and ran away with the game. The boys’ game was close thru out with the local boys jumping into a lead which Flat Rock soon overhauled. The half ended with Flat Rock holding a 12 to 10 lead. At the beginning of the second half, Tryon forged ahead and were six points in front by the end of the game. The entire Tryon team played jam-up ball, doing excellent guarding and making all their shots count. Bovs line-up: Tryon, 24. Jones, 6; Beatson, D., 7; Green, 3; Chapman, 1; Beatson, 3; Vining; Taylor. Flat Rock, 18. Breman, 4; Ta ber, 4; Davenport; Jones, C.; Drake, 4; Kilpatrick, 4; Jones, J.; Andrews, Brookshine. Referee: Foster. Tryon high will play the strong Columbus team, Friday night at the Tryon gymnasium. 1939 Fishing Licenses On Sale Soon R. B. Wililams, Polk county game protector, states that the 1939 County, State and Non-Resi dent fishing licenses will be on sale in a few days.
