House Approval Raleigh, Feb. 17.—The house today passed Representative Car roll P. Rogers’ bill to provide for the election of the tax collector of Polk county by popular vote. His measure would provide for the election of the tax collector at the 1940 election and biennially thereafter. It would require a SIO,OOO bond and would fix the salary at SI,BOO a year. The bill was given a favorable report yesterday by the house com mittee on election laws.—Asheville Citizen. ) TRYON, N. C., SATURDAY, FEB. 18, 1939 CURB REPORTER Edward Sayre and Anson Mer rick, two former Tryon Boy Scouts with the Eagle rank, the highest in Scouting, who are now attend ing the University of North Caro lina, are spending the weekend at home. Edward said Friday that he certainly appreciated having been a Boy Scout and that he would always be interested in the work. Said if he ever had any boys of his own that they would be Scouts if he had to make them. Every boy in Polk county has the wonderful opportunity of enjoying the bene fits of Scouting. But it takes some encouragement on the part of parents and adult friends. One of the reasons those boys listed yesterday became Eagle Scouts was because Mrs. Little, Mrs. Mer rick, Mrs. Sayre, Mrs. Stackhouse, Mrs. Jackson and the other mothers attended the Courts of Honor and gave the necessary influence when needed. Dr. Sutton, Supt., of At lanta Schools, saia that every merit badge earned by a Boy Scout was worth more to him than a unit in high school . . . Chairman C. Ar thur Lincoln of the Boy Scout Court of Honor has invited the Girl Scouts and their mothers to at tend the boys’ court on Monday night at the Parish House, when Harold Taylor will make his final test for the Eagle rank, and Scout Executive R.
