Town Election
On May 2nd
*The Biennial Town Election for
Mayor, Town Commissioners, Ceme
tery Commissioners and for mem
bers of the Tryon Special Charter
District School Board will be held
on Tuesday, May 2nd, at the Town
Hall on Maple street. Mayor E. E.
Missildine is the only candidate
filed for his office. Opposition
is found only in the list of names
for Town Commissioners where
four candidates are applying for
three offices and the municipal
voters will be compelled to omit
at least one name. The candidates

For three years Ignace Paderew
ski had been living in retirement
in Switzerland when Lothar Men
• des, the famous producer, persuad
ed him to make “Moonlight Sona
ta”.- A terrific job faced Mendes.
He had to find a story which would
satisfy not only his own moving
picture ideals but one that Pad
erewski would consider suitable.
Mr. Mendes won over another
famous artist to the motion pic
ture studio with “Moonlight Sona
ta”, Marie Tempest Dame Com
ander of the British Stage who
turned down film offer after film
offer because the stories submit
ted to her were not sufficiently dig
nified consented to make her film
debut with her old friend Pad
erewski. It was a casting tri
umph. The romantic roles are
handled by two favorites Charles
Farrell and Barbara Greene.
J. R. Sandifer Chosen
Head of Rotary Dist.
Hendersonville, April 24. Jo
seph R. Sandifer, headmaster and
owner of Blue Ridge school for
boys here, was elected governor of
the 190th district of Rotary In
ternational at the district "onven
tion Mionday in Sprtanburg, S. C.
Mr. Sandifer, a former president
and charter member of the Rotary
club here was nominated by Perry
Manville of the Tryon club. Sec
onds were by two South Carolina
Rotarians.
Mr. Sandifer was active in the
organization of the club here and
since that time has been one of its
most outstanding members. He
succeeds T. Wilbur “Buddy” Thorn
hill, of Charleston, S'. C., as district
president.
Western North Carolina and the
greater portion of South Carolina
are included in this Rotary dis
trict. Asheville has one of its
larger and more important clubs.—

Mrs. Farwell Buys
Local Property
Mrs. Arthur Farwell of Chicago
who has been spending the winter
in Tryon at the Spanish Court has
purchased a large tract of land
from Robert N. Golding in the
Hunting Country on Ridge Road
in the Morgan Chapel section. The
sale was made through C. J. Lynch.
Mrs. Farwell has visited Tryon of
ten and has taken an active part in
the Riding & Hunt club activities*
