Sawyer Named Head
of Polk School System
Columbus, April 26. Firank
Jackson, chairman of the Polk
, County Board of Education, an
nounced Wednesday the election of
Walter E. Sawyer, of Weaverville,
to the position of superintendent of
schools of Polk county.
He will succeed P. S. White,
who has been county superinten
dent since 1929 and who was not
a candidate for reelection.
Mr. Sawyer,* principal of the
Weaverville high school for the
past two years, is a native of South
Carolina and a graduate of The
Citadel, Charleston, S. C. He has
had wide experience in the educa
tional field, having taught in
Miami and Bradentown, Fla., and
in the states of South Carolina,
Georgia and North Carolina.
Birge At Rotary
President-elect E. Perry Man
ville will be in charge of the Try
on Rotary club program on Fri
day at 1 p. m., at Sunnydale Log
Cabin. The guest speaker will
be Walter Birge of New York and
Greenwich. Mr. Birge will speak
on India, where he spent some time
last year.
Baseball Friday
The Adams-Millis baseball team
will play Converse Mills team at
Harmon Field on Friday after
noon at 4:15.
