Merchant Prince: John Cowan,
local merchant who started on a
shoe string six years ago with a
few shelves of groceries is cele
brating his business birthday with
special sales this week. ’Since
its last birthday the business has
added a dry goods and clothing
store adjoining the grocery and
market which had an

a feed, fertilizer, seed and farm

Rotary-Insulation
James M. Baker will be in
charge of the Tryon Rotary club
program on Friday at 1 p. m.,_ at
Sunnydale Log Cabin. The guest
speaker will be Gerald Stone who
will present motion pictures pro
duced for the Johns-Mapville Co.
Community Invited
To Tea Saturday
It will be open house at the Try
on Country club on Saturday af
ternoon from 4:30 to 6:30. The
entire community and visitors are
invited to have tea at the club
house. Mrs. Edgar Rowe will be
hostess for the afternoon.
Golf Tournament
Here Saturday
Local golfers will have the
choice of three different events
in the golf tournament to be held
at the Tryon Country club on Sat
urday. There will be a tourna
ment for women only and one for
men only; also, a mixed two ball
foursome. Players can choose the
events they wish to enter and
should notify Pro Larry Brooks
as soon as possible. All events
will be handicap affairs. No en
try fee. Prizes for low net score
in each event.
Hester Defeats Caldwell
In Semi-Finals
Banker Julian B. Hester who
with Dr. B. B. Bishop won the
championship doubles trophy at the
Tryon Countrl club tennis tourna
ment last week has just com
pleted his semi-finals singles match
by defeating Coach ML B. Cald
well. He is now on the road to
the singles championship if he
can eliminate E. ML Armfield. The
match between Hester and Cald
well yesterday was very close.
Caldwell took the first set 6-2, but
lost the second to Hester by 3-6
and in the final set was within
one game of victory when the score
stood 5-2 in his favor, but Hester
overcame the lead to win 7-5.
Baseball Friday
Adams-Millis baseball team will
entertain the Drayton team on Fri
day afternoon at Harmon Field
at 4:15 o’clock. The lopals hope •
to repeat their victory of last
week by outhitting the visitors.
